Usability test
To see if our design would be understandable for a child, we had a child of the same age as our participant’s test our design. We first asked her to match the loose Velcro parts to their corresponding section. For this, she was able to match the clothing to the person and the bath quite easily. For the food, she recognized most of them, however she thought that the salad was rose bushes and placed it on the daycare task. To solve this, we changed the salad to carrots as they are easier to recognize. Additionally, she did not recognize the pasta and placed it with the tooth. She also did not separate the foods across breakfast and dinner but rather placed them wherever she wanted. She recognized the toothbrushes but placed one on a tooth and the other on a plate. She did not seem to understand the toothpaste and kept throwing it to the side.
Next, we went through all the tasks and asked if she knew what they were. She correctly recognized most of the tasks except for going to daycare and dancing, and she had some issues with brushing teeth. For the daycare, she thought it was just a house, and for dancing she thought it was singing. With brushing teeth, she was able to recognize the separate elements such as a tooth, toothbrush, and toothpaste, but didn't fully connect them all together. Lastly, with eating, she understood that the food belonged there, but did not seem to fully grasp that the white circle was a plate. When she completed a task, we introduced a check mark. At first, she was confused and thought it was an accessory for the getting dressed task. However, after completing to more tasks she understood that the check mark showed that she had completed it.
Throughout the process we also watched her behavior and how she interacted with the product. She was immediately drawn to it and had started matching the lose parts with the tasks before we even asked. From a motoric perspective, she was able to hold all the parts and place them with good accuracy. She understood without any explanation that the parts could be removed and stuck together. Whilst she was moving some of the parts, the Velcro fell off and stuck to other parts, making her a bit confused. To improve this, we went back and glued the Velcro on with stronger glue instead of just using adhesive tape.
